IDG analyzed the top 200 games by owners each year between 2022 and 2025 to find the best month to release a game. The answer shifts depending on whether a publisher is chasing broad reach or the best odds of a breakout hit.
Data & Scope
Data Set: New releases that ranked in the Top 200 in 2022-2025 (800 titles total)
Ranking: By owners. Each title’s launch month is mapped to its rank, showing how the most successful titles distribute across the calendar.
Launch volume
Count of top 200 titles by month.
Top-20 isolation
Crowding vs average rank; whether busy months bury their titles.
Hit rate
The percentage of a month’s top 200 launches that reached the top 20, showing the odds of a breakout hit
Quarterly trend
Each quarter’s share of top titles over 2022–2025, showing how launch timing is shifting year over year.
September and October see the highest volume of top releases overall.
December has the fewest, though that partly reflects its position at the end of the year, leaving less time to accumulate purchases.
The least crowded windows are January, February, and July, which may suit publishers looking to avoid heavy competition

February stands out as one of the strongest windows for a Top 20 entry, even though it sees relatively few top game releases, as seen on the prior page.
March through June draw a high volume of Top 200 entries, yet few break into the Top 20. June is the exception, likely helped by the start of summer vacation for students.
September and October offer a sharp contrast. Both generate the highest number of hits, but October stands out as the true blockbuster month.

The chart below compares the share of Top 200 titles that made it into the Top 20
February has the highest breakout rate of any month, converting far more of its launches into Top 20 hits than its volume would suggest. June, July and October also overperform.
March through May are the weakest converters, with high launch volume, but among the lowest share reaching the Top 20.

The two charts below show each quarter’s share of top titles over 2022–2025. At the quarterly level, one shift stands out— spring has overtaken the holidays as the hit season, with Q2 rising from 22% to 30% while Q4 fell from 33% to 21%.

The left list ranks months by launch volume, the right by breakout odds. The two rarely align. The busiest months are not the ones where titles are likeliest to break out. June and October are the exceptions, ranking high on both.
